Supported Software
GearBox manages Internet settings and preferences for popular system and application software.
Application Software Configured by GearBox
GearBox reconfigures the following Internet applications:
GearBox reconfigures preference files for the following System software:
・ MacTCP 2.06
・ Open Transport 1.0.8 - 1.2
・ FreePPP 2.5 and 2.6
・ Open Transport PPP (OT/PPP)
Passive Configuration with Internet Config
GearBox configures Internet Config 1.x, which is supported by many other Internet applicationsムfor instance, Microsoft's Internet Explorer. You can set up any application which supports Internet Config to work with GearBox. Most Internet Config-enabled applications have a preferences setting you can select for the application to read its settings from Internet Config. Set this option in your programs, and when you swap GearBox Sets, these applications will be reconfigured along with the other supported GearBox software.
Purchasing GearBox
Please read the file "How To Buy GearBox!" for more details on how to purchase GearBox or go directly to the GearBox purchase page at http://www.rockstar.com/purchase.shtml. Here you can purchase through online secure transaction or through mail order (such as MacWarehouse).
Getting started with GearBox
Registering
When you run GearBox for the first time, you'll be presented with a dialog asking for registration information. You should find your serial number near the front page of your hard manual or with your email confirmation, if ordered online. If you have not purchased GearBox, just click "Not Yet" and use GearBox as part of the 30-day demo. You should also register GearBox online at http://www.rockstar.com/register.html. Registering as a user enables you to receive FREE phone technical support and makes you eligible for special promotions and discounts from from time to time.
Your First Configuration Set
The next series of windows to appear during first startup will be "Easy Setup". This wizard-like interface lets you gather existing settings from the Internet software on your machine. Follow the directions to create your first Configuration Setムyou may need to further edit this Set when you've finished if you had incomplete information on your system. And if you don't already have an Internet account, you will need to set one up and have your Internet Service Provider or network administrator give you the relevant information (such as server addresses) for configuring your connection completely.
New Documentation
With version 1.5, we've made a number of significant improvements to the software since 1.0 was released. Consequently, your hard manual might contain a few inconsistencies with version 1.5. But not to fear, your revised documentation has been updated and turned into HTML text. You can keep this handy on your machine whenever you need the definitive answer to feature-related questions. Also, refer to the HTML version of the FAQ included with the installation for other related answers. As always, the most recent answers are found on the Rockstar Studios Website at www.rockstar.com.
Netscape Communicator (Navigator 4) Support
Netscape Communicator (Navigator 4) has the ability to manage unique "profiles" for each user sharing the browser. Thus, GearBox does not need to manage Communicator Components (bookmarks, address books, mailboxes) as attachments like in previous versions of the software. When you create a Configuration Set in GearBox, GearBox in turn creates a corresponding profile in Communicatorムyou will automatically have unique Communicator Components for that particular Configuration Set.
If you have existing profiles in use before installing GearBox 1.5, you can attach each profile to a corresponding Configuration Set. Just rename the profile to the exact same name as the GearBox Configuration Set. Now GearBox recognizes it as belonging to the Set and manages it accordingly.
If instead you want to build a new Configuration Set based on the profile: Switch to the profile in Communicator and quit. Run Easy Setup in GearBox and be sure to import the settings from the Communicator profile.
Support and Troubleshooting
For technical support, send e-mail to gbsupport@rockstar.com. If you are connected to the Internet, you can use the Gearbox Help menu item "GearBox Support E-mail". You will be eligible to receive support via telephone after you purchase GearBox (please register!). Before contacting Rockstar directly, you first might be able to solve a problem by consulting your GearBox documentation or visiting the Rockstar Studios Website for the latest troubleshooting information.
If you encounter problems while running GearBox, try looking here for answers, online at the Rockstar Studios Website under GearBox FAQ, or in the documentation. If you think you've found a problem with GearBox that is not covered in this section, online or in the documentation, please send a bug report to: gbsupport@rockstar.com.
Incompatibilities
1) Gearbox does not work with aliases to folders for preferences that we configure. This includes aliases to Eudora, Netscape, and Explorer prefs. If you are using aliases as a way to support multiple users, we suggest you try the Component and multiple Configuration Set functionality found in Gearbox already.
2) Gearbox does not currently work with non-English systems.
How to remove GearBox
If you decide to remove GearBox from your computer, be sure to first detach any Component files, such as bookmarks, which you have added to the program if you want to reuse them later. You can detach files individually from within the GearBox "Manage..." dialogs, or you can copy them from the GearBoxェ folder in your System Folder. Because GearBox thinks it needs these files to run properly, you should only copy files manually if GearBox has crashed or if you have no intention of using it again.
After you have detached the Components you want to reuse, you can throw away the GearBox application folder, the GearBox Folder (in your System Folder) and the FreePPP Extension and PPP Menu Control Panel. Again, make sure you've detached any Components first if you wish to reuse them.
